Green 4
Vocals
In this recording session we tracked Vocals, we began the recording session at 09:30, not an ideal
time of day for vocals! Because of the early time I was extra careful to be warming up my voice from
the time I woke up. We began by getting a Neumann M147 – a valve condenser. We got set up in the
control room with a reflection filter because I wanted to be able to see the levels going through the
pre amp, compressor, desk and going into protools. We used an ISA 430 mark ii pre amp set as
shown.
Initially we had some trouble with the motu analogue to digital converters. We’ve had this problem
before so we recorded a 3 or 4 bar sample to see if it was having the usual problems instead of
finding out while listening back to the whole first take. We turned off the sound cards and rebooted
them, this solved the problems. Because I was in the control room we set up the pre amp with
headphones, using Beyerdynamic 770s so as not to induce feedback between the microphone and
the monitors. We then muted the microphone and listened to recorded vocals to critique the sound.
I recorded take after take, getting the several takes of both the main vocals. I will use 2 or even 3 of
these in later chorus’ to thicken the sound of the vocals. The last thing I tracked was the high vocal
harmony. In their most raw forms freshly tracked they sounded fairly good but we will go back over
all the takes we use to pitch correct it as well as adding EQ, compression, etc.
