Greenroom 2

Today I was in the studio again this time tracking some vocals. I recorded in the control room because I was recording myself and wanted to be able to view the meters. The signal chain was as follows.

Neumann M147

Focusrite ISA430

Warm Audio 2A (An LA2A clone)

SSL XL mixing desk

MOTU audio interface

Pro Tools

This tracking session was to redo some of the vocal lines for Boulevard of Broken Dreams.

The most fun sessions all have problems and this one wasn’t exempt. I set up the whole signal chain in one go, got my levels and got ready to go. I did one full take and then sat down to have a listen. There was a lot of noise on the take, a lot, so I began to trouble shoot. I began by taking out the pre amp and the LA2A and going straight into the desk pre. I then tracked a short section to see if the problem was still there. The next thing I did was swap out the microphone for a U87, there was still noise so I turned it off and on again on the advice of one of the studio technicians. Such an elegant solution, it worked. He said that they had been having some issues with some of the MOTU ATD converters.

After this I did a number of different takes, focusing on the first line because this I wasn’t happy with from my first recording. It is much improved now and I will release this before I get to far underway with this years recording project for university.
